Brief history of the Department:

In 1958, a new Musical Drama Faculty was opened at the A.N. Ostrovsky Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts to train specially qualified personnel for Uzbek musical and drama theatres. In the early 1960s, the Vocal Department was established within the Musical Drama Faculty.

The main goal of the teachers was to develop vocal and singing skills among students, contribute to the artistic interpretation of musical works, and cultivate the aesthetic taste of future actors through vocal art.

Since 1974, the department was headed by People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Associate Professor Asat Azimov. A. Azimov was a highly cultured professional singer with a lyrical tenor voice. He performed leading roles in productions at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Uzbekistan. He devoted great effort and professional mastery to educating young performers.

In addition to vocal performance training, soloists of the Navoi Opera Theatre such as Halima Nosirova, Sattor Yarashev, Sason Benyaminov, Ergash Yo‘ldoshev, and Mikhail Davidov were invited to teach students national vocal traditions. These masters of the Uzbek opera stage performed classical and folk songs with exceptional artistry.

Alongside People’s Artists, highly qualified teachers such as S. Murodxonov, Yu. Murodov, V. Kopilova, M. Musheev, M. Davidov, E. Pyatigorskaya, B. Lutfullayev, Sh. Pirmatov, G. Yeroshina, and G. Xolboyeva made a significant contribution to the training and development of students.

In the early 1980s the department consisted of two divisions: **Academic Performance** and **Traditional Singing**. The Academic Performance division was headed by People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Professor Asat Azimov. The Traditional Singing division was headed by People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Professor Sason Benyaminov.

Many distinguished singers and musicians were invited to teach there, including People’s Artists of Uzbekistan Berta Davidova, Kommuna Ismoilova, Orif Alimaxsumov, Isoq Kataev, People’s Hafiz of Uzbekistan Orifxon Xotamov, Honored Artist of Uzbekistan Xadiya Yusupova, as well as musicians T. Maxmudov, S. To‘xtasinov, S. Tahalov, M. Odilov, S. Musheev, A. Rajabov, K. Jabborov and Q. Tillaboev. An instrumental ensemble was also formed at the department.

A major achievement of Sason Benyaminov’s creative and pedagogical work was combining European and Uzbek vocal traditions, thereby establishing a strong artistic school for students.

Between 1988 and 2004 the **Traditional Singing Department** was formally established and headed by Sh. Pirmatov, a talented student of S. Benyaminov and a performer with a beautiful lyrical voice.

From 2004 to 2011 the department was headed by Honored Artist of Uzbekistan and cultural figure B. Lutfullayev. During this period, prominent artists and teachers such as X. Yusupova, R. Abdullayev, Q. Komilov, K. Kayumov, A. Rajabov, S. Murodxonov, Sh. Pirmatov, G. Xolboyeva, Y. Murodov, Q. Islamova, N. Qaxxarov and others actively contributed to training young performers.

Following the Presidential Resolution of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the establishment of Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture” (June 4, 2012, PQ-1771), the **Vocal Department** was established under the Faculty of Theatre Arts. The department was headed by Professor Sh. Pirmatov (2012–2017) and later by D. Uzoqov (2017–2019).

Currently the department is headed by Honored Cultural Worker of Uzbekistan Associate Professor **Muzafarova Saodat Xaydarovna**.

The department plays an important role in training professional performers for students of the **Vocal Performance** program at the Faculty of Cinema, Television and Radio Arts, as well as students of the Theatre Arts Faculty studying Dramatic Theatre and Film Acting, Musical Drama, Variety and Mass Performances, and Puppet Theatre.
