About the institute

Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture is a state higher educational institution operating in the field of professional education. The Institute has passed state accreditation and awards graduates with state-recognized diplomas in two levels of higher education — bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

The Institute was established by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 1771 dated June 4, 2012, on the basis of the former Tashkent State Institute of Culture and the State Institute of Arts of Uzbekistan.

It is a unique higher educational institution that trains specialists in narrow fields directly related to culture and the arts. The educational process integrates science and art, creativity and applied technologies.

The Institute comprises 4 faculties and 18 departments, where students study in 26 undergraduate programs and 19 graduate specializations in Uzbek and Russian languages.

The Institute trains professionals in acting and directing, art studies and theatre studies, sound and video directing, cinematography, folk art (instrumental, vocal, folklore, and traditional performance), management of cultural and art institutions, museum studies, art criticism (drama of stage and screen arts, film criticism and analysis, theatre studies, art journalism), management, tourism and hospitality, and library and information science.

Currently, more than 4,297 students are enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Students receive scholarships and social support in accordance with national regulations.

The Institute’s academic potential has been steadily growing over the years. Among its 336 faculty members, 43 are Doctors of Science and Professors, 133 are Candidates of Science and Associate Professors, and more than 40 teachers hold honorary titles. The overall scientific potential of the Institute is 55.6%.

A Postgraduate Education Department operates within the Institute, where 24 doctoral students and 94 independent researchers conduct their scientific work across five specializations.

The Scientific Council for the Awarding of PhD Degrees (No. PhD.08/28.08.2020.San.121.01) functions under the Institute. The Council provides permanent defense opportunities in the specialty 17.00.01 – Theatre Art, and one-time defenses are allowed in 17.00.03 – Cinema Art and Television, 17.00.07 – Theory and History of Culture. Cultural Studies, and 13.00.02 – Theory and Methodology of Education and Upbringing (by fields).

In recent years, the Institute’s activities in the field of international cooperation have been developing rapidly. During 2024, the Institute signed several memorandums of understanding with prestigious higher educational institutions in Turkey, Russia, China, and South Korea. Within these partnerships, academic exchange programs, internships, and professional development opportunities for teachers and students have been established.

In 2024, the Institute entered the international ranking “UI GreenMetric World University Ranking” for the first time, securing the 947th position among the top 1,000 universities worldwide.

Furthermore, in 2025, the Institute ranked 28th among the world’s top 1,000 universities in “THE Higher Education Rankings”, and was recognized among the Top 5 universities in Uzbekistan. This result demonstrates the growing international recognition of the Institute’s scientific potential, educational quality, and innovative activity.

The Institute also actively participates in the “World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI)”, which evaluates universities’ practical contributions to society, innovation, and creativity. According to 2025 results, Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture ranked 69th among 1,350 universities worldwide in the category “Student Support and Engagement (A1)”.

In the category “Student Mobility and Openness”, the Institute ranked 2nd among all higher education institutions in Uzbekistan.

These achievements highlight the successful integration of Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture into the international educational community and its commitment to creating an academic environment aligned with global standards.

Modern information technologies, multimedia tools, and digital resources are widely applied in the educational process. Training sessions are organized in cooperation with cultural institutions, allowing students to strengthen their practical skills and creative experience.

Artistic and creative activity holds a special place in the Institute’s life. Many student creative ensembles actively participate in national and international festivals and competitions, enhancing the reputation of the Institute.

The Institute’s publishing activity is expanding. The scientific and practical journal “UzSIAC Bulletin” (O‘zDSMI Xabarlari) and the newspaper “Ijodiy Parvoz” are published regularly, featuring research articles by professors, teachers, and students.

Since 2025, the Institute has launched an electronic journal “Culture and Art of Uzbekistan”, specializing in research publications in art history, philology, history, philosophy, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, and political science.

The Information Resource Center (IRC) plays an important role in the educational process. Its collection contains over 100,000 items, including rare editions, scientific literature, and electronic educational resources. The development of the electronic learning system and creation of modern educational materials are being actively pursued.

The Center for Retraining and Advanced Training of Pedagogical Staff ot the institute focuses on improving the professional qualifications of teachers in the fields of culture and art. Regular training courses are conducted to enhance modern methodological and ICT competencies.

With the construction of new buildings and the renovation of existing ones, the Institute has formed a unique academic campus, which includes creative workshops, a training theatre, and a modern information resource center.
The campus also houses the administrative building, educational blocks, a sports complex, an indoor swimming pool, outdoor sports grounds, and two student dormitories.

On the initiative of the Rector, during the 2022–2023 academic years, the dormitories were modernized, creating more than 200 additional places, and now 768 students are provided with accommodation. Priority is given to students from orphanages, low-income families, and those in need of social support.

Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture stands today as a modern higher education institution that harmoniously combines traditional and innovative teaching methods, possesses strong scientific and creative potential, and makes a significant contribution to the development of culture and art in the country.
